BTEC Applied Science

Applied Science is a course that perfectly balanced both the learning of scientific ideas and principles with the development of practical skills in all three key science areas, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students on the course will gain the knowledge to explain the trends found within the elements of the periodic table, Investigate electrical circuits and learn in greater detail how their own human body systems work. There is plenty of opportunity for practical work to develop skills in accuracy of measurement, processing data and problem solving, which then leads into developing written communication skills and computer skills through the production of scientific reports as coursework.

BTEC Applied Science is for students seeking a level three qualification who wish to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education or apprenticeships and ultimately employment in the applied science sector. Students will study across all three sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics covering topics including: fundamental chemical and physical principals, structure and function of cells, physiology and disease, astronomy and space science, electromagnetic waves and satellite communication amongst many other fascinating areas of cutting-edge science.

BTEC Applied Science is equivalent to one A level. The course covers a variety of scientific modules including: the basics topics of science, practical techniques, laboratory skills, scientific investigations and analysing scientific data.

Assessment is a blend of coursework and exam, so this qualification will appeal to learners who prefer portfolio-based assessments which will cover a variety of scientific investigations.

Academy Entry Requirements: A minimum of five GCSE grades 9 – 4.

Students must attain a Grade 44 in Science
