Engineering

These pioneering new qualifications offer a great alternative to the current vocational qualifications and enable learners aged 16+ to progress into employment, an apprenticeship or further study at university.

Modern life depends on engineers to develop, support and control the products and systems that are all around us. For example, cars, heart rate monitors and manufacturing and transport systems. To make a contribution as an engineer you must be able to draw on an important range of principles developed by early engineering scientists, such as Newton, Young, Faraday and Ohm. There is an increasing demand for ‘multi-skilled’ engineers who can apply principles from several engineering disciplines to develop solutions.

This course provides an attractive alternative to the traditional A Level for students who prefer to have more practical element in engineering. The fundamental philosophy of this course is that, students actively experience the engineering environment including electrical and electronics engineering.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Engineering is a single award and equivalent to 1 A-Level. The course is run over two years alongside 2 other subjects

BTEC L3 National Extended Certificate consists of 4 units of which 3 are mandatory and 2 are external.

The units are including:

  • Engineering Principles (External exam)
  • Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team (Mandatory – internally assessed)
  • Engineering Product Design and Manufacture (Externally assessed)
  • Electronic Devices and Circuits (Optional – internally assessed)

Academy Entry Requirements: A minimum of five GCSE grades 9 – 4.

Students must also attain a grade 5 in GCSE Maths

“From a young age, I have been fascinated by engineering, the built environment and the way machines work to aid everyday life. The concept of combining maths, physics and logic to find innovative solutions to problems really interests me and this is why I chose to study BTEC engineering.”
