Economics

AS / A Level Economics is a popular choice for students in the sixth form and those who wish to study Economics at degree level. It has a diverse spread of topics so it appeals to a variety of students. This subject is for the “All Rounder”, the person who is as happy writing an in depth report as solving a maths problem. If you have an interest in current affairs and watching TV documentaries about the political and business / economic world then you will find this subject stimulating and interesting.  The course covers the national economy, inflation, unemployment, economic growth and how governments use various policies such as taxation or interest rates to influence the economy. We also looks at personal economic behaviour and the behaviour of firms e.g. what influences wages or investment.

The aim of Economics is to understand the world around us and to provide students with tools to interpret society’s decisions. The course aims to equip students with the literary and numerical skills to collect empirical evidence about how the economy is performing, and to make judgments on policy.

The course is split into microeconomics and macroeconomics and students will study both of these areas each year.

Three written papers, each lasting two hours. Each paper is marked out of 80 and each counts for 33.3% of the A Level.

  • Paper One focuses on microeconomics (Markets and Market Failure)
  • Paper Two on macroeconomics (The National and International Economy)
  • Paper Three a mix of the two (Economic Principles and Issues).

Each paper will consist of short written answers and longer essays, and paper three also contains 30 multiple choice questions.
