Maths

A level Mathematics is often thought of as a subject of complicated calculations. However, calculations form only a small part of this rigorous discipline which requires clear thinking and the development of specific ideas into generalised solutions. A level Mathematics gives you the opportunity to study topics such as geometry, calculus and trigonometry (pure mathematics) and to use these ideas within the 'applied' topics such as mechanics and statistics. Mechanics is strongly linked to physics and builds on ideas of motion and forces to work out how and why objects move. Statistics allows us to make sense of the complex and variable world around us via analytical methods in order to draw reliable conclusions from 'sets' of information.

Subject Lead: Mr Gibson

Students will develop an understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment. The course includes:

Core Mathematics (approximately 67%) This extends GCSE work in algebra, coordinate geometry and trigonometry whilst introducing new ideas and techniques, in abstract mathematical theory.

Mechanics (approximately 16%) Including mathematical modelling in which systems of forces are analysed and the motion of bodies is considered.

Statistics (approximately 17%)

This develops the ideas of probability and statistics met in GCSE mathematics, progressing to the modelling of real-life situations.

Paper 1

Pure Mathematics Written examination 2 hours

Paper 2

Pure Mathematics Written examination 2 hours

Paper 3

Mechanics and Statistics Written examination 2 hours

Students may choose to sit Maths as an AS examination at the end of Year 12. Students will sit two external papers.

Grade 6 or above in a GCSE Maths

Maths has always been a challenging subject for me, but with the incredible support of my teachers, I've developed a genuine enjoyment for it. Having a subject that challenges your thinking is crucial, and maths does exactly that, providing a profound sense of accomplishment. Regardless of future aspirations, I highly recommend taking maths as it cultivates a wide range of skills. Choosing maths at A Level has allowed me to unlock my potential and venture into new areas. Moreover, many STEM courses in university require maths, making it beneficial for various fields. Plus, it's much more enjoyable than GCSE!
