This course is for students who are interested in the human mind, brain and behaviour. Psychology involves studying the human mind and behaviour in a scientific manner. Students will develop an appreciation for differing perspectives on the causes of human behaviour as well as a deep understanding of the different ways we can measure human behaviour.

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour and is therefore directly relevant to your life. It is an interesting subject as it focuses on why people behave as they do. Throughout the course students will study approaches to, and debates within psychology, as well as analysing research methods used by psychologists throughout the approaches. 

Students will follow a series of compulsory and optional topics, including:  

  • Social Influence – obedience and conformity;  
  • Psychopathology – explanations of mental illnesses (OCD, depression and phobias);  
  • Biopsychology – how the brain and nervous system influence behaviour
  • Forensic psychology -explanations of criminal behaviour and profiling

The A Level is assessed with three equally weighted written papers, each lasting 2 hours.

Paper 1 – Introductory Topics in Psychology

2 hour written exam (33.3% of A-Level)  

Paper 2 – Psychology in Context

2 hour written exam (33.3% of A-Level)  

Paper 3 – Issues and Options in Psychology

2 hour written exam (33.3% of A-Level)  

Academy Entry Requirements for A Level pathway

Grade 5 or above in English and either GCSE Maths or Science

Psychology is undoubtedly challenging, requiring a significant amount of work, but its captivating nature makes it highly recommended. The supportive teachers play a crucial role in navigating this demanding subject. Moreover, the extensive range of supplementary reading materials available has been immensely helpful, aiding in the development of effective UCAS applications and enhancing overall understanding.
